I’ve been crunching the numbers on Open Office’s Calc for the past couple of days, and all I’ve figured out is that the Big XII is going to be one tough cookie to crack this year. I’ll be trying to guess more accurately in the fall, but for now I can say that 2008 may not look that different from the 2007 final standings. Hopefully, I can be objective when it comes to the Huskers abilities this year - it’s difficult trying to analyze if you’re giving too much or not enough credit to your team.

Since the college football season ended, I’ve been saying that Mizzou will falter while we find that KU will take a downhill slide to mediocre-ville. Wishful thinking, really. Once I looked at the situation surrounding these programs, I see no reason that the Missouri Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks will not have 9+ win seasons and significant bowl games.

Much can be learned from this year’s Big XII bowl season. Kansas and Missouri both made very strong statements that they should have been considered for one of the top two bowls this year. Missouri made it clear they should have been in a BCS game at the very least. We are also learning that Bob Stoops is not the unstoppable giant Big XII teams have made him out to be. At just one bowl win in the last five years, the Sooners have got to be feeling the disappointment.

Arizona potent passing attack. Check. 305 passing yards.
Longhorns run stopping controls game. Check. Held ASU to 22 yards rushing.
Sun Devils late surge. 24 points in second half.
My score prediction of 30-27. No check. I overestimated ASU defense. The sloppy play for both teams was surprising. 52-34 was a little more than I though would happen.

Are the Huskers a basketball school now? Well, no more than the Kansas State Wildcats are a basketball school or no more than Kansas is a football school. The Big XII teams like to be players in all sports, not just football. Expect some exciting basketball this season, along with some upsets. Do not expect Nebraska to be chasing the number one spot this year - but don’t be surprised if they aren’t fighting for the number four spot behind Kansas, Texas A&M, and Texas.

Much has been said about the resurgence of the Big 12 North this year with Kansas and Missouri ranking so well at the end of the regular season. While improved, I still don’t think that they have the necessary strength to beat some of the more dominant teams in the country this year. Out of the 8 teams in bowl games, we should see 4 Big 12 wins, all coming from the Southern Conference.

In this year’s Big 12 Championship, we see Missouri and Oklahoma in a rematch of their October 13th battle. These two are not quite the same teams that we saw earlier this season. Missouri is gaining confidence as they head towards a battle for the number one spot in the nation. Oklahoma is coming off smashing OK State after a disappointing loss to Texas Tech. The Tigers had a short-lived one point lead in the last game this year before Oklahoma capitalized on the Mizzou mistakes. This time around, we will probably see a game that comes down to a last second drive and score to win.
