Where Are They Now?
After Bill Callahan was fired as head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers on November 24, 2007, Nebraska fans could have cared less with what happened to Bill Callahan. Now it seems we Huskers are struck with a morbid fascination in the future of our past coach. I say morbid because most probably do not wish him well, rather they hope to see this poor (not literally) man fail, lest some other reason be brought to light on our poor performances of the past few years. We want validation that the correct scapegoat was named.
Callahan to Kansas City?
Last week, Kansas City Chiefs Coach Herman Edwards fired four assistants including offensive coordinator Mike Solari. The favorite rumor going around on the internet is that Bill Callahan is on the short list for the Chiefs Coordinator job. As a Husker and a Chiefs fan, I can’t imagine a scenario that gives me nightmares more than this.
Free at Last!
As the Bill Callahan era drew to a close, I likened the feeling to the end of a sentence or punishment. It’s as if the football gods had decided: OK, you’ve learned your lesson, lets get back to what this game is all about. Did Bill Callahan know what Nebraska football was about? I doubt it. But you know what? Bo Pelini knows. Pelini knows that Nebraska football is about TRADITION. What does that mean for our program?
So Wrong in So Many Ways
From the get-go, we all assumed that the Nebraska coaching staff knew what they were doing this year. It all seemed to be lining up with a big QB surrounded by exceptional offensive talent. Our defense had many players returning with game experience along with what appeared to be the best line backing corps in the Big 12. Coaches and players were saying all the right things. Bill Callahan had everyone believing without too much question what this team was going to be.
Callahan Focus Finally on Defense

Unfortunately, Callahan’s new focus on defense is the type that won’t win him games. In yesterday’s Big 12 Teleconference he spent 5 out of his 10 minutes available avoiding a simple question. He was asked multiple times in multiple ways, if you are a 6-6 team, what makes you deserving of a bowl opportunity over other teams with the same record?
What If Bill Callahan Stays?
In what is turning out the be the biggest split in Husker history, the Bill Callahan era appears to be drawing to a close - or so it seems. As a man of his word, Dr. Tom Osborne has now said multiple times that he intends to meet with the current coaching staff the day after the Colorado game. If you think that the 5 loss streak during “Black October” caused an uproar, what do you think will happen if Dr. Osborne decides not to request the removal of Callahan?
Bill Callahan's Days Are Numbered
Someday, I can imagine Bill Callahan being another anecdote about what happens when a school or organization chooses to shy away from tradition. “Look here,” I’ll say to my grandkids, “I blogged about the Huskers when wanted to bring a ‘new order’ to Nebraska.” It seemed like a good idea at the time. I jumped on the Callahan bandwagon early, trying to convince my Chiefs-loving wife that it’s not his fault that the Raiders started sucking. The problem is that Callahan is just a mediocre coach.
