Callahan Focus Finally on Defense

Unfortunately, Callahan’s new focus on defense is the type that won’t win him games. In yesterday’s Big 12 Teleconference he spent 5 out of his 10 minutes available avoiding a simple question. He was asked multiple times in multiple ways, if you are a 6-6 team, what makes you deserving of a bowl opportunity over other teams with the same record?
Bill Callahan was given the floor to tout his offense, or anything about the team, that would mean Nebraska deserves to be in a bowl game this year. In all instances, he either misunderstood the question, or deliberately avoided it. In fact, he said that all questions about the current bowl system should be deferred to the Big 12 Conference. To paraphrase, it was not his place to speak on such matters. Intentional or accidental, it is another indication of why the Husker Nation wants to see him gone.
Yes, I understand that we still have one more game to complete before we can think about bowl eligibility, but a coach MUST say something positive about our team every chance there is. Here’s what I see. Callahan does not see this as his team anymore.
There are two other options:
- He cannot think of something positive to say
- He is deliberately sabotaging the chances of Nebraska to receive a bowl bid
A win Friday does not even guarantee bowl opportunity, but imagine how important an extra game is for recruiting and exposure. Again, Callahan lacks the foresight for the big picture.
