Don't Turn Ganz into Keller
Joe Ganz was impressive in the last few games of the season for the Huskers. It was his gunslinger attitude that lead to offensive output that Husker fans have rarely seen. Unfortunately, it was the gunslinger in him that made him loft some passes in the KU game, and throw in ill-advised situations in the Colorado game. We all know that Keller used to have the “gunslinger” moniker, but I was not impressed with what our (now fired) coaching staff had done with him. You can tell by the headline of this article what I think does and does not need to happen.
This time of year is always entrenched in the recruiting topic of the week, as well as talk about who’s leaving for the NFL and who’s staying for another year. I’m hoping the coaching staff is getting the opportunity to discuss future plans with current players, players who aren’t in transition, and aren’t going anywhere. Joe Ganz needs to keep the rapport going with Watson and build up a good relationship with Bo. Now is the time for learning what they have in mind. If Ganz doesn’t know what the coaches are going to be looking for next year, fans will see a quarterback battle followed by a timid, indecisive wreck on the field.
I’m not saying that Keller was a wreck. Callahan just didn’t develop him at all. In fact, it seems like Bill regressed the gunslinger out of him (except during two-minute offense when Keller’s instincts kicked in). Ganz must have the confidence he had in these last few games without the mistakes. He needs to know that the “one play, one game” mentality won’t work with Pelini. Bo’s patience in the national championship game was a huge indicator of how his mind works. His games aren’t won in the first quarter or with just one play. Ganz has to know that if he doesn’t get the big play right now, he will have other shots at it - but we don’t want him to throw away wasted opportunities.
We could also have another quarterback battle this year before the season starts. I’m a huge Zac Lee fan after seeing his stats and what he had done at San Fran Community College. He had Zac Taylor passing stats with tons of rushing on the side. Joe cool is obviously the guy to go with right now, but having two mobile, accurate guys is in a great spot to be.
