I'll Believe It When I See It
“In Bo We Trust” is apparently the catchphrase of the week for Husker faithful. According to a few different media sites, the defensive players have been sporting the saying around the locker room. Pelini’s press conference today shows the fans why they believe it: Confidence. As for me, my patron saint is Thomas the Doubter.
These first few practices can set the tone for the next 10 months. As Bo puts it, the right kind of foundation continues the path set forth in conditioning and practices. It will bring confidence to the players to see the coaches content with the direction they began. Spring game will be the first opportunity for assessment. If our players cannot perform, changes will be swift and effective.
Will the tough love work on these players? Bo has proven that his leadership has developed some amazing team chemistry, but his first chance to lead a whole team will be under added scrutiny for any signs of cracks or flaws. As our guys are conditioned for speed, stamina, and explosive strength, weak links are going to be harassed by media and teammates. True leaders won’t be determined by whoever is sitting behind the microphone, but rather by whoever motivates his fellow Husker to go full effort until near collapse.
I’m as big a Bo Pelini fan as the next guy and can really appreciate how well he’s begun handling his face time with the media. But it’s all talk until I see tears in the eyes of our players after the most grueling practice they’ve ever been a part of. You want guys who are tough? Don’t be afraid to make them work. If they want it, they will go for it.
