More Kansas State Musings
Maybe I misunderstand the definition of running up the score. 52-10 is a pretty big score already, so going for it on 4th and 20 instead of punting, is what, brilliant? Would Bill Callahan still make that call instead of punting if he were down by 2 with 8 minutes left in the game - when field position is ever important? Oh wait, I know - leaving your first string running back in to go for it on a 4th and goal with 4 minutes left while you’re up by 42 points is just for an emotional lift on Senior Day.
Why not give it to Senior fullback Andy Sand or Matt Senske, then? Why was Marlon Lucky even in there at all anytime past the 12 minute mark in the 3rd quarter? Give other guys the reps they need for next year! Make sure our guys don’t get injured before the Colorado game! When TO was accused of running up the score, teams had to stop our 2nd and 3rd stringers, not 3 4th down attempts from our 1st stringers.
The behavior of people is very important to me. I believe very strongly in personal responsibility and how you own the actions in which you partake. When a coach says that it was the defensive scheme working that won them the game that’s not taking responsibility that stealing the credit from a record-setting quarterback that you didn’t want to go with in the first place. When a coach says that he didn’t adjust properly in a loss, that’s taking responsibility. Your players will learn from that and realize that they are in control of what happens on the field. Do you know what happens when players are in control? They win games.
Results? You want results? Fine. I don’t just want results. I’m not a robot that only looks at W-L and gives thumbs up or down. I’m a person. I was more upset with coaching in this win than I was after some of our losses. Yeah, it felt good at the time, but this game actually shows Callahan won’t be able to make the right decisions in the long term. He’s already coaching like he’s got no future here.
