Ron Prince Worried About Huskers?
Ron Prince has sounded someone concerned about his team playing Nebraska this upcoming Saturday. Without his Senior Nose Tackle, ever important in the 3-4, I can see why. Marlon Lucky and his backup cast of seemingly thousands loves to run out in the open or up the middle. Get Cody Glenn and Quentin Castille to pound the limited D-line and then open up with some screens and draws to Lucky or Helo. If K State tries to stop them with 7 in the box, they just may be surprised. This team was shocked a little by Iowa State, and never woke up.
Even more than the running game, Prince has a healthy respect for what a first time starting quarterback did in a tough situation. Aware of the threat that a Ganz to “main target” Purify poses, he has realized that his defense will have its hands full enough focusing on our receiving corp as well as a running back who catches the ball so well. Expect them to come at Ganz early and back off late to take advantage of the forced balls that were thrown in the KU game. Their undersized secondary will need the quick linebacker help to make this happen.
The Wildcats have shown streaks of greatness on offense with their second year quarterback, Josh Freeman and this past week with wide out Jordy Nelson. Shotgun draws and misdirections are a staple of this running style which Nebraska has unfortunately been susceptible to since 2001.
If K State continues to make mental mistakes in the penalty department and red zone, Nebraska may get a chance to exploit it. They will need those chances because Nebraska’s terrible special teams will be facing arguable one of the best special teams groups around the country. That just may be the great equalizer in a game that could go either way.
Prince’s rhetoric doesn’t ring so much with worry as it does with disappointment in his team’s performance and streaks. If only Nebraska’s coach had the understanding to know when he and his staff are not being “excellent in all areas.”
