What If Bill Callahan Stays?
In what is turning out the be the biggest split in Husker history, the Bill Callahan era appears to be drawing to a close - or so it seems. As a man of his word, Dr. Tom Osborne has now said multiple times that he intends to meet with the current coaching staff the day after the Colorado game. If you think that the 5 loss streak during “Black October” caused an uproar, what do you think will happen if Dr. Osborne decides not to request the removal of Callahan?
I’ll tell you what should happen: the fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers should respect the decision of the number one guy in Husker football history. Instead, we’ll get half on one side, half on the other (or 40-60, or 80-20, etc). It will be Fire Solich/Don’t Fire Solich camp, Move Forward NFL Style/Embrace and Extend Tradition, WCO/Option et al. all over again. You know, in the representative democracy we live in, you’d think fans would have learned to compromise since 1869 or 1776.
I see both sides of the issue, and I believe the exact middle solution is to make Callahan the offensive coordinator. It’s a demotion that utilizes his strong characteristics and moving his weaknesses to an area that cannot damage the football team in the manner that it has this year. Unfortunately, that puts Watson in a bad position. On the other hand, I think everyone deserves a tiny demotion, except for Cosgrove.
Kevin Cosgrove deserves to be fired. What he does not deserve is to be threatened for his job performance. I don’t tell my grocer that I’m going to kill him if my eggs and bread are smashed. I don’t threaten the postal courier for delivering mail to the wrong box. Although the perpetrators of the threats are probably the same guys who left me angry messages when I didn’t update their website 15 seconds after they sent me an email.
Two things to remember all you Husker faithful out there:
- Don’t drink and use cell phones.
- It is only a game - not life or death.
