Embarrassed About Husker Win
I despise Kansas State as much as the next Husker, but I was actually pretty embarrassed by the Husker Smack Down of Kansas State yesterday for three reasons:
- Defense quit in the fourth quarter
- Callahan blatantly ran up the score
- Callahan ducks out after the handshake
You see, that’s the thing he’s never understood while coaching here. Nebraska fans want a guy who’s a winner off the field as well as on the field. To tell you the truth, if his off field attitude and behavior were more like Ron Prince, he’d probably not be worried about losing his job right now. Instead, he thinks that if he can blow out a middle of the road team, he proves that he’s still excellent in all areas.
Well, congratulations coach, your quarterback (who you didn’t go with originally) is excellent, your defense (who played with heart because of Ruud) played with emotion, your special teams (with Grixby killing his body because of Senior Day) playing all out, and your schemes (which took advantage of individual effort) finally worked.
But by running up the score and leaving the field with no respect, you’ve negated most of the positives for me about this game. Leave no doubt, I love the Husker players, and they deserve all the praise from this game, but Callahan has no idea what it’s all about.
I’ve been hearing lately that fans of opposing teams have had some “run-ins” with Nebraska fans. This is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. The fans are a reflection of the current staff’s ideals. You want to ruin … whoops I mean run … this program like an NFL team, then expect your fans to boo when they don’t like the product, and jump on the bandwagon if they do. Expect NFL fan behavior with trash talking, rudeness, and total disregard for tradition.
Husker fans as a whole can still be called the classiest in the land, but if Callahan were to stay here, you can expect a degradation of the behavior for years to come. When we get a coach who knows what tradition is about, we will quickly gain our fan credibility back. When we have a coach who cares what has happened since 1869 can we be proud of our staff win or lose.
