Super Demorrio Williams Now a Chief
The Huskers need more guys like this. One of my favorite players when I was at UNL in ‘03, “Super” Demorrio had a following second to none (except for maybe the Polkamaniacs). This was one of the guys who would run through walls. Even though his college days came to an end during the beginning of Nebraska turmoil, his resume was nonetheless impressive.
In Williams’ 2002 season, he led the team in tackles with 92. He was a standout Husker fan favorite his Junior year, led by his special teams punt blocking. His speed is tremendous and he is amazingly strong for a linebacker of his size. In his Senior season he played a major role in Bo Pelini’s highly ranked Husker defense. He and Barrett Ruud totaled 277 tackles in 2003, the first pair to get 100+ in over 20 years. He led the team in sacks, blitzing QBs with reckless abandon.
Earning many Player of the Week, All Big 12, and All American Awards topped off his season, but getting drafted 101st overall is the icing on the cake. A young gun at Atlanta, he was averaging over 85 tackles a year playing a backup role in his rookie season and starting the last three. The Kansas City Chiefs signed him to a 5 year deal with over $5 million in guaranteed money on March 1, 2008.
When you look at the type of players Williams played along side with, you get a feeling of hope for the recruits Pelini is trying to bring into the fold. Not to diminish the abilities of the players, but Pelini helped turned great college players into guys bound for NFL careers. In four years, we should see the fruits of these labors by how many players end up with NFL careers.
